ORANGEBURG, N.Y., May 25 /PRNewswire/ - When a major power outage stranded thousands of rush-hour commuters on Amtrak trains in tunnels under the Hudson River this morning, Verizon Wireless rose to the occasion handling ten times the normal number of calls between 9 and 10 a.m. The nation's most reliable wireless network handled the huge surge in calling with no abnormal call blocking. Outside of the tunnels the network experienced normal call volumes.
In addition to an increase in voice calls, the company's high-speed wireless broadband data network handled three times the amount of traffic as commuters used laptop computers, PDA's and EVDO-capable phones to communicate with business associates, customers and friends.
Isn't this, in theory, why we have this technology. Nice when it works, isn't it.
